New Photo, Project #1- Claire Cavanaugh

This is another photo from the Aerie Real campaign; just like the previous photo I posted, the model has not been retouched. This is under Aerie's campaign to stop retouching their photos and using so-called "supermodels" in an effort to reach out to girls, conveying to them that "the real you is sexy".

PROJECT #1 FIRST PHOTO - Zaire Peoples

Topic: Media as a scapegoat
This is a photograph of an abused women that was placed in a Bulgarian magazine called "12 Magazine". It glamorizes abuse among women. Many people blame the media and ads like this for displaying violence against women and sending the message that violence is okay. The woman in the photo, although having a black eye, is still depicted as beautiful and glamorous.

 Photoshop version:
I replaced the model's bruised eye and I added freckles to her face to make her look more realistic (not that she looks fake). I also just added the word 'beauty' rather than "Victim of Beauty". This photo shows a different side of beauty.

Kathryn Miyahira/Caption: This is a photo of a University building with the most popular forms of social media incorporated on the side to show how colleges are beginning to incorporate these new platforms, for my research project on how media has revolutionized marketing, specifically for colleges and universities.

Project #1 Photo, Cecilia Schnobrich

Cecilia Schnobrich/Caption
This is Ansel Adams, a photography legend. Adams lived and worked in a time when photography as a profession and art was unburdened by photo editing software like Photoshop. For my topic I will research how the constant presence of this software affects aspiring photographers and also how, when used in the media, it affects our adaptation of what the truth is.

Project # 1 First Photo- Claire Cavanaugh

I chose this photo from the "Aerie Real" campaign as the first photo for my topic: body image and objectification in the media. As stated on the photo itself, "the girl in this photo has not been retouched." Following the motto, "the real you is sexy", Aerie has launched a campaign that can be found on their website, all over the rest of the internet, and even Instagram. Through this campaign, the lingerie company stemming off of American Eagle Outfitters has taken a vow to stop putting their photos through Photoshop or other editing programs, and in addition, to stop using "supermodels". Keeping with this promise, they have also begun featuring plus-sized models in their photos.

Project #1 Photo

Jessica St. George:  I chose this photo of a little girl mesmerized by a television to represent how big of an impact film and television have on our everyday lives and how people get so wrapped up in a television show or a movie that they have a hard time distinguishing what is normal in the real world in comparison with what is normal to see on screen.

Project #1 Photo

This photo of Bill McKibben relates to my topic of digital media's affect on understandings of climate change because as the founder of 350.org, McKibben has created a way for people to connect around the world and add their voices to the discussion of climate change. 350.org has led to larger and more comprehensive protests than ever before.

Project 1: First Photo

Emma Rippe: This picture relates back to my topic because my research is about how media effects the music industry today, and this photo shows that we are cutting down on CDs and moving on to portable devices like iPods to listen to music, and getting music online rather than records and CDs.

PROJECT #1 FIRST PHOTO - Kristina Kingsley

Kristina Kingsley/wearable technology & the future: This is a photo that I believe represents how humans are discovering new and more powerful means of technology every day, and how it is becoming a more integral part of our every-day lives and the functioning of the society in which we live as a whole.
